MILOS TRAVEL GUIDE: WHERE WE STAYED, ATE, AND WENT

A beautiful street in Plaka

Island hopping in Greece has long been at the top of my bucket list, and we were lucky enough to do a little bit of it last year. One of my favourite places I went to was Milos so I thought I would do a mini travel guide about where we went, what we did, where we stayed etc. Milos is maybe one of the most beautiful, most colourful and friendly places I’ve ever been to, it is so unspoilt, so traditional and just stunning everywhere you look. It wasn’t touristy at all which I absolutely loved and it was such a nice relaxing quiet vibe. It’s small and easy to get around if you have a car (would recommend hiring one there aren’t tonnes of taxi’s. We went in August and stayed for three days. I’d say thats enough time as the island is really small so you can see everything in that time, but it would of course be lovely to stay even longer.

HOW WE GOT THERE

We left from Mykonos and got the ferry over to Milos with the Sea Jets ferry. It took around 2 and a half hours, stopping at a few other islands on the way. We booked the ferry in advance online which I’d recommend doing especially in the summer they get booked up fast. If you get sea sick then I recommend taking some sea sickness tablets or getting the travel bands as it can be a rocky ride. We organised for our hotel to pick us up from Milos ferry port, but there are taxi’s there too.

WHERE WE STAYED

There are three main places that people tend to stay at in Milos. Plaka is the main town, Adamas is the port and Pollonia is a small fishing village around 15 mins drive from Plaka and Adamas. We decided to stay in Pollonia because it seemed lovely and quaint and really pretty with nice restaurants and a small beach, whereas Adamas wasn’t overly pretty and was just a port really, and Plaka is stunning but it’s very hilly and you can’t drive all the way through it so if you have luggage etc then you might struggle to get to your hotel etc. So we settled on Pollonia and I’m so glad we did.

We stayed at Delmar apartments, we had our own separate little villa which had a beautiful sea view and lots of space and a mini kitchen lounge area. The owner was so lovely and kind and was so helpful, providing lots of recommendations and she was able to book our car and also our boat trip too. She gave us her number and told us to contact her whenever, if we wanted a dinner recommendation or anything! It was a great location too, we could walk to the little village in a couple minutes.

WHERE WE ATE

The restaurants in Milos are beautiful, but there is a lot of focus on seafood and fish, particularly in Pollonia as most of the restaurants are owned by fisherman who go and fish in the morning and then serve what they’ve caught that evening. We love fish so we absolutely loved the food, it was always delicious. We ordered meat one of the times and it wasn’t that nice, so I would recommend sticking to fish dishes in those restaurants. I think in Plaka the meals with meat in would maybe be better than Pollonia as it’s a bit more of a main town.

  • Medusa - Super laid back, amaaazing food. It’s famous on the island for its octopus which they catch and leave to dry outside in the sun which is pretty cool to see. Very rustic with a simple but delicious menu. Get there early to get a table as it is popular.

  • Gialos - This is in Pollonia. The food is amazing and it’s set right on the waterfront with is beautiful

  • Rifaki - This is in Pollonia. We loooved it here, the staff were so friendly and welcoming. The food was amazing too. Definitely get the seafood linguine!

  • Utopia Cafe - this is in Plaka and is really well known for it’s sunset view. You have to get here reeeeally early to get a table, like at least an hour before sunset as there aren’t many tables.

  • Phatses - Also in Plaka, it’s really traditional and has live greek music and serves traditional Greek dishes. Book a table here too as it gets busy.

  • Palaios - In Plaka. We got breakfast here and it was lovely, it has a beaut terrace and a huge menu.

WHERE WE WENT/WHAT WE SAW

  • We rented a boat and a skipper for half a day and went to Kleftiko Caves. This is one of the most beautiful parts of Milos and so cool to explore. Our boat trip was booked by the lady who owned Delmar, and was from a company in Pollonia. We met the boat at the little tiny port in Pollonia. Our captain was super friendly and so knowledgeable. He took us to some amazing less known spots where the water was so crystal clear and the cliffs were so white. He also had snorkels with him so we were able to snorkel in and out of the caves which was magical. Highly recommend this trip as most of the beautiful parts of Milos can only be accessed by boat. Go early in the morning to beat the crowds.

  • Head to Sarakinko Beach. This is the beautiful “moon beach”, which is made up of white rock in amazing formations. This is sooo cool, we loved it. Again get there early to avoid the crowds. Also remember there is no shade and it does get really hot so it’s not really somewhere you’d want to stay all day but an hour or so is perfect, theres some water you can dip into or you can jump off the cliffs into the water if you’re brave enough!

  • We also went and wandered around Klima Fishing Village. It’s such an again unspoilt traditional village with beautiful brightly coloured houses. Some of the houses have little shops in them. It’s a great place to catch the sunset too!

  • If you are into history, you’ll love the Catacombs of Milos and the Ancient Theatre.

  • If you want to catch an amazing sunset view, head to Plaka, and from the Utopia Cafe, take a right and keep walking and walking (just follow the path up) to get to the church on the top of the hill. Keep going a little further than the church and you’re able to sit up on the wall there and watch the sunset go down. Get there early again as it does get busy. It’s quite a steep hill up so bear that in mind!

  • One morning we headed to Plaka for breakfast and then just spent a few hours wondering around the tiny streets in and out of the little boutiques and it was just so lovely, we had such a nice time exploring and it was so beautiful and so quiet.

BEACHES IN MILOS

Milos is famous for its amazing beaches and clear blue water. There are so many beaches on the island but we only visited a few. Bare in mind some have sun beds and some don’t so check that before you go! Some beaches that we visited are:

  • Firiplaka Beach

  • Paliochori Beach

  • Tsigrado Beach (the only access to this is either by boat or by a ladder going down from the cliffs
