DECLUTTER YOUR HOME AND YOUR LIFE

Making productive use of this period where staying at home seems the best thing to do, I’ve compiled a list of all the different things you can do to declutter your home and your life. Especially if you’re feeling anxious, I find decluttering really helps to clear the mind and help you feel a lot more relaxed… when the job is done!

Kitchen:

  • Under the sink

  • Cleaning Supplies

  • Cupboards

  • Cutlery Draw

  • Random Crap Draw

  • Fridge

  • Freezer

  • Tupperwares

Bathroom:

  • Throw out shampoo and conditioner bottles in the shower

  • Old toiletries you don’t use/have expired

  • Organise medicine

Wardrobe:

  • Clothes. Clear out anything that doesn’t fit, that has holes in, or stains on. Anything you’ve not worn in a year then it’s time to pass it on.

  • Shoes

  • Underwear and PJ’s

  • Swimwear

  • Accessories

  • Jewellery

  • Clothes hangers

  • Clear out handbags you’ve been using and throw receipts, rubbish, put away things that shouldn’t be in there. Essentially unpack your handbags.

Make up/Beauty:

  • Clear out anything past it’s use by date. Look on the bottom of make up pots or the back of tubes to see how long you should have it for. There will be a little illustration with a number inside like 12M or 18M which means you should keep it for that amount of time. Anything you’ve had for longer, get rid of.

  • Minimise hair products and brushes/combs etc.

Linen:

  • Clear out old bedding

  • Clear out old towels

  • Organise linen cupboard into piles of each item for easy access

Miscellaneous items:

  • Clear out and organise bedside table

  • Donate unwanted DVDS

  • Old Magazines

  • Organise Xmas Decorations

  • Donate books you no longer want

  • Clear out and organise draws under your TV or in your coffee table.

  • Put bulbs, batteries, adaptors, chargers, general items like that into labelled boxes.

  • Clear out empty candle jars or clean out and reuse them.

  • Electrical cables and mystery chargers if you have no idea what it’s for and haven’t needed it in a year then get rid.

Car:

  • Clear car out of rubbish, empty bottles, parking tickets etc

  • Clear the boot out, put in useful things such as reusable bag, umbrella, a blanket etc.

Computer:

  • Delete old files you don’t need

  • Create new files and organise the ones you keep

  • Clear out images and put the ones you keep into chronological or location order.

  • Clear out your google drive or your Dropbox or your iCloud.

  • Check what’s on memory cards/USB sticks and delete as appropriate

  • Empty Recycle Bin

  • Clear Desktop

  • Unsubscribe from Mailing Lists

  • Organise emails into folders

  • Transfer photos from your phone over to a hard drive or computer

Social Media and phone:

  • Cull your Facebook friends list

  • Go through phone contacts and delete old numbers, duplicates, ones you don’t need anymore

  • Delete photos you don’t need - a good way of doing this is starting with the “screenshots” album. I find a lot of that is full of crap I don’t need.

  • Delete apps you don’t use and organise others into folders

  • Clear all your alarms

  • Close down your apps

  • If you’re one of those people with 500 unread texts, go through and clear those notifications

  • Clear your notes page of notes you don’t need anymore

  • Organise all your passwords securely

Life Admin

  • Clear purse out - throw receipts you don’t need and loyalty cards you don’t use

  • Go through old notebooks/school files and declutter what you don’t need

  • Organise all your house/life admin and paperwork into a folder divided by each subject, e.g Car Insurance, Phone Bill, Utilities etc.

  • Clear out paperwork you don’t need anymore.

  • Go through your bank statements and see if there are any direct debits you’re paying that you don’t want anymore etc. Just being wise of what’s coming in and out of your account will help you feel much more organised.
